Farewell, my dear peach tree! At least you died an honest, natural, and proper death, and I'm happy to commend you for it—you withstood and endured until you could no longer and the great enemy twisted your limbs from their sockets. You had no choice but to give in. You fell and were severed from your roots. But you weren't shattered by bombs dropped from planes, incinerated by devilish acids, torn from the soil of your home like millions of others and fleetingly replanted, roots bleeding, only to be caught and made homeless again; you did not have to experience the apocalypse and destruction, war and desecration around you, and die in misery in the end. You had a fate suitable to your kind. I'm happy to commend you for it: you grew old better and more beautifully, and died with more dignity, than us. We have to defend ourselves in our old age against the poison and misery of a pestilential world, have to fight to wrest every breath of fresh clean air from the rot devouring all around us.

Türkiye doğdu ama sanki daha doğar doğmaz, büyüyüp gelişemeden, serpilip olgunlaşamadan birdenbire yaşlandı. Bir bebeğin sırasıyla çocukluğa, gençlikten yetişkinliğe, olgunluğa ve nihayet ihtiyarlığa geçişi değil, aniden ihtiyarlamasıydı bu; aşırı duygusallıktan bir gecede saçları ağaran film karakterleri gibi. Duygu patlamaları yaşayan bir sınırda kişilik, bir ihtiyar bebek, tarihin bir anomalisi. Ve işte bu ihtiyar nihayet beni kovdu, tükürdü, bünyesinden attı. Herkes aradı. Fakat kimse bulamadı onu.
Kırılmak için kendini yaşantıya bırakman yeterli dedi. Çünkü hayat kırar. Çaba isteyen esnemektir, kırılmak değil.
Başıma ne zaman bir felaket gelse oturur her şeyi baştan düzenlerim. Rafları indirir dizerim. Çekmeceleri döker yeniden doldururum.
