It should be noted that Kant lived a good portion of his life (1740–1786) under the rule of the Frederick the Great, whom Kant believed to be somewhat enlightened. However, when Frederick William II came into power after his father’s death, he was not as indulgent as his father when it came to freedom of expression or thought. Therefore, Kant’s writings toward the end of his life were almost self-censored because he knew his work would be read for censorship of unfavorable views or ideas.
