Perhaps the closest England has come to having an institutionalized academy is the Society for Pure English, founded in 1913 by the poet Robert Bridges, who was concerned by the ‘advancing decay’ of English caused by the laziness of its speakers. Bridges attracted an impressive number of distinguished academic supporters for his mission to improve the language as an aid for ‘the intercommunication of ideas’. Yet, alongside his desire to promote intercultural harmony was a darker purpose that sought to root out the ‘blundering corruptions’ caused by those ‘communities of other-speaking races’ whose imperfect acquisition of the English language was infecting and mutilating the superior tongue. Bridges’ conflicted aims demonstrate how attempts to purify and control English are often driven by social, moral, and racial agendas; by seeking to keep English pure, Bridges was really concerned with the purity of its speakers.
"The art of swimming – she supposed like any art – was about purity."

I pray on my knees so long, looking up sideways at my Christ, I suddenly wake up in a trance in the church with my knees aching and a sudden realization that I’ve been listening to a profound buzz in my ears that permeates throughout the church and throughout my ears and head and throughout the universe, the intrinsic silence of Purity (which is Divine). I sit in the pew quietly, rubbing my knees, the silence is roaring. –

I talk about the purity of that kind of crazy love. He tells me that he will never see the film.
That’s what the sea had done to them, too. It had annihilated them without for a second relinquishing its formidable purity, those crests of glory that the water raised with a perseverance completely unconcerned with humankind. It was definitely a higher power. Once again, Amador was sure that this was God’s embrace and that Coronado had died in his terrible bosom.

Pure cocaine will set for a period of about ten seconds on the surface of the bleach. It will then trail very slowly toward the bottom of the glass, leaving milky trails in the liquid. It will before long disappear completely with the exception of an oil spot or slick at the top of the glass. This slick is comprised of the natural oils of cocaine which remain after the refining process. Different kinds of unadulterated cocaine will show results that vary slightly. The purest cocaine will hesitate longest before falling (but never more than fifteen seconds), will trail longest while falling, and will disappear completely except for the surface oil spot. With practice, the tester can develop his expertise enough with this test to determine the approximate percent of purity.

“Do you want to know why it is I wear this crown?” “I am the first horseman,” he continues, “the one who was tasked with toppling your old way of living. You and your foolish brethren believed you could outpace God. You built and innovated, and in your quest you robbed the earth of its purity and forgot that you all had another master. “You all turned your backs on God—yes, even you, dear Sara—and I am here to make you remember. “I am your mortality. I am the ugly truth that your bodies are impermanent, feeble, corrupt. I am the reminder that all men must face a great and fearsome reckoning.” The rain thunders with his voice. “This is who I have always been and will always be—undying, unchanging.”
Whenever politicians start talking in mystical terms, beware. They might be trying to disguise and excuse real suffering by wrapping it up in big incomprehensible words. Be particularly careful about the following four words: sacrifice, eternity, purity, redemption. If you hear any of these, sound the alarm. And if you happen to live in a country whose leader routinely says things like 'Their sacrifice will redeem the purity of our eternal nation' know that you are in deep trouble.

The laws of purity were regarded as safeguards against the demonic hosts. The Vendidad details the precautions one must take after cutting one's nails. One must bury the scraps while uttering a magic spell, and trace a furrow nine times around the spot. Then one must dedicate the scraps to the owl, as the bird beloved of asha , so that it can use them as darts and arrows against the demons. Otherwise they will fall into the grasp of the demons themselves, to become their darts and arrows.
Love will remain, sex will be gone, and then love has a purity and a beauty and a sacredness of its own.

In tragedy the firm polarities and the clear expression of values in the social order are dissolved in ambiguity, complex inversions, and conflicts. The basic moral terms of civilized life become fluid and uncertain or tense with contradictions: wisdom and nature in the Bacchae, justice in the Oresteia or Antigone, knowledge in the Oedipus Tyrannus, purity in the Hippolytus, and so on.

Thought in the mind hath made us. What we are By thought we wrought and built. If a man's mind Hath evil thoughts, pain comes on him as comes The wheel the ox behind . . . If one endure In purity of thought, joy follows him As his own shadow - sure.
The Orphic life is determined above all by dietary taboos. Orphics eat no meat, no eggs, no beans, and they drink no wine. This kind of purity stands in polar opposition to the initiation in which animal sacrifices are generally involved. Bacchic initiations are unthinkable without wine.
An ideal type is formed by the one-sided accentuation of one or more points of view and by the synthesis of a great many diffuse, discrete, more or less present and occasionally absent concrete individual phenomena, which are arranged according to those one-sidedly emphasized viewpoints into a unified and analytical construct (Gedankenbild). In its conceptual purity, this mental construct (Gedankenbild) cannot be found empirically anywhere in reality. It is a utopia. Historical research faces the task of determining in each individual case, the extent to which this ideal-construct approximates to or diverges from reality.

In 508, Caesarius of Arles set up a convent under his sister, Caesaria. The Rule which he composed for her in 512 became a classic. He brought together an unusually large group of women (200 in all) in a single convent of St. John. He deliberately placed this group in buildings that abutted the walls of the city itself. By their position beside the city walls, they were marked out as the spiritual protectors of Arles, at a time when the city was under constant danger of siege. Caesaria’s nuns were recruited with care from the daughters of the elite. Like the virgin priestesses of Roman times, their purity was held to protect the city as a whole. Their unearthly seclusion and carefully paced life of prayer and reading made of them the Vestal Virgins of the new Christian city.
