French troops entered Rome on 15 February, the twenty-third anniversary of the Pope’s coronation. The cardinals were arrested, the Pope ordered to prepare himself to leave Rome within three days. When he asked to be allowed to die in Rome the French commander, General Berthier, replied contemptuously, ‘A man can die anywhere.’

For the many equations in his now-famous 1637 mathematical work La Géométrie, René Descartes chose letters A, B, and C to represent any three constants and X, Y, and Z to represent any three unknown quantities. He intended that Z be the first unknown (corresponding to A), with Y second and X third.
But the story goes that the printer, while typesetting the manuscript, found himself repeatedly running short of letter blocks for Y and Z, due in part to Descartes’ many equations calling for these letters. However, the printer still had plenty of X’s, a letter that in French-language print is used far less than Y or Z.
So the printer wrote to Descartes, asking whether it made any difference which of the three, Z, Y, or X, appeared in equations of one or two unknowns—and might X be the preferred letter for printing purposes? The great man replied that this was acceptable.
The third basic rocket propellant is the venerable black powder which is available from sporting gun stores. However, the powder used in the traditional muzzle loading arms is more powerful than that used in the rockets. To make a rocket powder from the hunting powder approximately 40 grams of fuel (charcoal or sugar) are added to every 100 grams of the hunting black powder. The charcoal may be made from barbecue brickettes broken down and screened for size.

The core of the Heracles complex, however, is probably considerably older still: the capture of edible animals points to the time of the hunter culture, and the relation to the world beyond with cattle of the sun, a red island, and man-eaters probably belongs to shamanistic hunting magic – something which also seems to be reflected in the cave paintings of the Upper Palaeolithic.

The triangle is a simple shape, but more complex than the simplified binary that language is stuck in. The triangle is always expanding. It always opens up to a multiplicity that branches out in our subconscious. When we introduce that third component, we no longer have only a mirror image, but depth, or a magical symbol, creating portals to other places. What happens to two counterparts if you add a third? It becomes hard to define what the third component is; it could represent a sea of different possibilities. Reality, fiction, and? Man, woman, and? The presence of this third point makes the counterparts tremble.
