After finishing high school, Bulgakov entered the Medical School of Kiev University, graduating in 1916. He wrote about his experiences as a doctor in his early works Notes on Cuffs and Notes of a Young Country Doctor. His later works treated the subject of the artist and the tyrant under the guise of historical characters, but The Master and Margarita is generally considered his masterpiece. 15 Mayıs 1891'de Kiev'de doğdu. 1916'da Kiev Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi'nden mezun oldu, fakat birkaç yıl sonra doktorluğu bırakarak hayatını edebiyata adadı. Kiev Şehir Tiyatrosu'nda sergilenen ilk iki oyunu büyük başarı kazandı. İlk eşiyle Moskova'ya yerleşen Bulgakov, 1922-1926 arasında oyun yazmayı sürdürdü, fakat Sovyetler Birliği'nin ideallerini yansıtmadığı gerekçesiyle oyunlarının sahnelenmesi yasaklandı. 1925'te yazdığı hicivli romanı 'Köpek Kalbi' de benzer bir kaderi paylaşarak, Sovyetler Birliği'nde 1987'ye kadar yayımlanamadı. Aynı yıl ilk eşinden boşanarak Lyubov Belozerskaya'yla evlendi. Sanatını icra edememekten bunalan Bulgakov, 1930'da Stalin'e bir mektup yazarak yurtdışına çıkma izni istedi. Fakat bu talebi reddedilen Bulgakov'a Moskova Sanat Tiyatrosu'nda sahne arkasında bir iş ayarlandı. 1938'de, ölümcül hastalığına yakalanmadan hemen önce başyapıtı sayılan 'Üstat ile Margarita'yı tamamladı. 1940'ta böbrek yetmezliğinden öldü. Kitap ilk olarak 1966-1967 yıllarında, dul eşinin çabaları sayaesinde 'Moskva' dergisinde yayımlandı. Kitap olarak 1973'te basıldı.
