Shadow stopped in the street, and stared. “Are you trying to tell me that ancient Egyptians came here to trade five thousand years ago?” Mr. Ibis said nothing, but he smirked loudly. Then he said, “Three thousand five hundred and thirty years ago. Give or take.”

Sacrifice is a part of life. It's supposed to be. It's not something to regret. It's something to aspire to. Little sacrifices. Big sacrifices. A mother works so her son can go to school. A daughter moves home to take care of her sick dad.

Did you ever wonder? Why people gather when others die? Why people feel they should? It is because the human spirit knows, deep down, that all lives intersect. That death doesn't just take someone, it misses someone else, and in the small distance between being taken and being missed, lives are changed.

Now, the Formless is the great forefather of creatures, and the Soundless is the great ancestor of sounds. [...] Therefore you look at it and cannot see its form, you listen to it and cannot hear its sound, you follow it and cannot get to its person. It is formless, but what has form is generated from it; it is soundless, but the five sounds resonate from it; it is tasteless, but the five tastes take form from it; it is colorless, but the five colors are developed from it. Therefore Being is generated from Non-Being, and the actual is generated from the empty. What is below heaven is its fold, and thus names and actualities (mingshi) dwell together in it.
So tell me the secret so I can take it back to Earth and save us all: How can a planet live at peace?

Wanting something that I couldn’t have. But now what I want isn’t outside. It’s right here, close enough to touch. But I can’t. I didn’t know it was possible to want something so bad you could feel it in your arms and your legs and in every breath you take.

“ ‘Share everything I know about CF with others.’ I have this, uh, YouTube page . . . .” I draw a line through it and look up at Will to see him not at all surprised. Someone’s been checking up on me. “So is your plan to die really, really smart so you can join the debate team of the dead?” He points out the window with his pencil. “You ever think about, I don’t know . . . traveling the world or something?” I look back down to see number 27, “Sistine Chapel with Abby.” No line through it. I clear my throat, moving on. “ ‘Learn to play the piano.’ Done! ‘Speak fluent French’—” Will cuts me off. “Seriously, do you ever do anything off list? No offense, but none of that sounds fun.” I close the notebook, and he continues. “You want to hear my list? Take a painting class with Bob Ross. Lots of happy little trees and cadmium yellow that you don’t think will work but then . . .” “He’s dead,” I tell him. He gives me a lopsided grin. “Ah, well, then I guess I’ll just have to settle for sex in the Vatican!” I roll my eyes at him. “I think you have a better shot at meeting Bob Ross.” He winks but then his face gets serious. More serious than I’ve ever seen it. “Okay, okay. I’d like to travel the world and really get to see it, you know? Not just the inside of hospitals.” He looks back down and keeps sketching. “They’re kind of all the same. Same generic rooms. Same tile floors. Same sterile smell. I’ve been everywhere without actually seeing anything.”

Surprised, I reach over to pause the Pink Floyd song on my computer, swiping right to answer the call. “I knew it!” she says as her wide eyes come into view. “Where’s your AffloVest? You weren’t supposed to take it off for another fifteen minutes. And did you take your Creon? I’ll bet that’s a no.” I fake an automated voice. “We’re sorry, you have reached a number that is no longer in service. If you feel you have reached this recording in error—” “You can’t be trusted,” she says, cutting into my killer impression. “So, here’s how this is going to work. We’ll do our treatments together so I know you’re really doing them.” I tuck the pencil I was using behind my ear, playing it cool. “Always looking for ways to spend more time with me.” She hangs up, but for just a second I swear I saw her smile. Interesting.

She rolls her eyes, clearly not entertained by me. “You letting your friends borrow your room for sex isn’t cute.” Ah, so she’s a real goody two shoes. “Sex? Oh, heavens no. They told me they would be holding a slightly rowdy book club meeting in there for the better part of an hour.” She glares at me, definitely not amused by my sarcasm. “Ah. So that’s what this is about,” I say, crossing my arms over my chest. “You have something against sex.” “Of course not! I’ve had sex,” she says, her eyes widening as the words tumble out of her mouth. “It’s fine—” That is the biggest lie I’ve heard all year, and I’m practically surrounded by people who sugarcoat the fact that I’m dying. I laugh. “ ‘Fine’ isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement, but I’ll take common ground where I can get it.” Her thick eyebrows form a frown. “We have nothing in common.” I wink, having way too much fun pissing her off. “Cold. I like it.”

“Pay attention. Did you hear me? You’re in charge of the wedding.” “Yes, I heard you. You’re coming home while I arrange it, right? I need time.” “No, we’re not coming home. I expect you do it quickly.” How long did it take to arrange a simple ceremony? “I can’t do it quickly. If you want to give Tess the dream, I need at least a month.” “No, fucking way. You have five days, Suzette. You have five days to arrange a suitable wedding. Invite who you think should be there. You’re in charge.” A surprised squeak hurt my ear. “Five days? No, there’s no way—” “No arguing. Do it.”
