In this story, there are Marxist theory and also feminism are included: The lady’s
unchosen scenarios that she has been forced to go through, the oppression by men and social
perception towards women, were not equal with men at all.
In my own opinion, i do believe that Jeanne gives the fake necklace to Matilde on purpose. Imagine,
in a such period that social class differences are at top of the world living, and everybody has
prejudices over people due to this issue, you can not really trust a lower class member. Not because
you’d have a legit reason for not to but because the cultural perception wants you to think that way.
So, thinking about Jeanne, a high class member, who is not even aware of Matilde’s absent for 10
years; does it make a sense that she would trust her and share her precious jewelry? We know that is
not possible when you think about this deeply. I think she gives fake jewelry to make fun of her and
to humiliate her even more. Because high social members are people who know and are aware of
what is and is not fake, so she knew that Matilde was going around the party wearing a fake necklace
and everybody will notice it. The attention on her wasn’t because of she was so beautiful and such. It
was because they were humilating her with their gaze. Poor Matilde.
Social class differences are like the pen of our destiny. The author how beautifully and exactly tells
that difficult period was a chaos that continuing in ignorance; Marxism resists against oppressed
weak, poor objectification, alienation, otherness, control and uncontrol classes, majority, unspoken
truth, and hegemony . As known as the author usually uses realism ideologies on his works it is no
surprise!
