as if we were villains on necessity; fools by heavenly compulsion; knaves, thieves, and treachers by spherical predominance; drunkards, liars, and adulterers by an enfore'd obedience of planetary influence; and all that we are evil in, by a divine thrusting-on!
Truth must of necessity be stranger than fiction, said Basil placidly. For fiction is the creation of the human mind, and therefore is congenial to it.

Necessity
Small navies have often struggled amongst themselves for command of the sea, and large ones have been known to use flotillas of small ships to do the same on rivers, lakes, inland waters and coastal seas.

It is true that all forms of life — by necessity and by natural design — consume one another to live, but they do not intentionally bring about another's extinction, systematically deprive other species of their source of food, or create factions and wars. The same cannot be said for human beings.

Sceptics and Ordinary Life
In their ordinary lives sceptics find themselves under the humiliating necessity of imitating the behaviour of the same simple dogmatists to whom they feel theoretically superior. Sceptics may be giants in argument, but ordinary life cuts them down to size.

If, as I believe, the ends of men are many, and not all of them are in principle compatible with each other, then the possibility of conflict - and of tragedy - can never wholly be eliminated from human life, either personal or social. The necessity of choosing between absolute claims is then an inescapable characteristic of the human condition. This gives its value to freedom as Acton conceived of it - as an end in itself, and not as a temporary need, arising out of our confused notions and irrational and disordered lives, a predicament which a panacea could one day put right.
and when he did speak, it seemed the effect of necessity rather than of choice—a sacrifice to propriety, not a pleasure to himself. He seldom appeared really animated. “konuştuğu zaman da istediğinden değil mecburiyetten konuşuyor gibiydi –zevk almak için değil, kabalık olmasın diye. Nadiren neşeli görünüyordu.”

güzel tavsiye:°°What we want is just a rest.°°
" Rest and a complete change, " said George. " The overstrain upon our brains has produced a general depression throughout the system. Change of scene, and absence of the necessity for though, will restore the mental equilibrium.
Pride is one's response to one's power to achieve values, the pleasure one takes in one's own efficacy. And it is this that mystics hold as evil. But if doubt, not confidence, is man's proper moral state, if self-distrust, not self-reliance, is the proof of his virtue; if fear, not self-esteem, is the mark of perfection; if guilt not pride, is his goal–then mental illness is a moral ideal, the neurotics and psychotics are the highest exponents of morality, and the thinkers, the achievers, are the sinners those who are too corrupt and too arrogant to seek virtue and psychological well-being through the belief that they are unfit to exist. Humility is, of necessity, the basic virtue of a mystical morality; it is the only virtue possible to men who have renounced the mind.

3/5 Stars (%65/100) Audre Lorde was an extremely important woman during the feminist movement, especially for African-American women. Since I am a fan of poetry, this was very interesting to read. Lorde talks about the necessity of literature, poetry specifically, for women. Women should use poetry to express themselves and make people listen to them. Great essay about poetry and women's movement.

"This is the excellent foppery of the world, that, when we are sick in fortune-often the surfeit of our own behavior-we make guilty of our disasters the sun, the moon, and the stars . . . as if we were villains on necessity; fools by heavenly compulsion; knaves, thieves, and treachers by spherical predominance; drunkards, liars, and adulterers by an enforc'd obedience of planetary influence; and all that we are evil in, by a divine thrusting-on!"

"Communism ... is the genuine resolution of the antagonism between man and nature and between man and man; it is the true resolution of the conflict between existence and essence, objectification and selfaffirmation, freedom and necessity, individual and species. It is the riddle of history solved and knows itself as this solution."
