Hard Times reminded me of Huxley's Brave New World. Both portray a dystopian city. The difference is that Hard Times is too in your face. Dickens' fictional city Coketown, homes people of radically different points of view and means of living when the circus stops over the town for a few months. There are people obsessed with

"LIKE THE USA,CHINA,GERMANY,JAPAN AND IRAN,ISRAEL SEEMS TO UNDERSTAND THAT IN THE 21. CENTURY THE MOST SUCCESFUL STRATEGY IS TO SIT ON THE FENCE AND LET OTHERS DO THE FIGHTING FOR YOU "You know less than you think

2/5 Stars (%44/100) It was okay in general but there were lots of unnecessary details in my opinion, especially Marianne Weber's loooongg descriptions of everything. Other than that, it was nice to learn more about Max Weber's visit to the US because it really affected his way of thinking. I was more or less familiar with Weber's ideas but the book provided me with more information about the visit (that's the purpose because Marianne Weber already published a book about Max's life). To sum up, it is a nice book to learn more details about the 1904 visit but I found most of the parts boring and irrelevant. I would not read it again

3/5 Stars (%59/100) I've read the major words of Morrison and I think Beloved is still my favorite. Morrison's novels are brutally honest, graphic and disturbing. They are not easy to read for a variety of reasons and sometimes it makes reading less enjoyable for me. However, there is no doubt that she was a very talented writer, especially in terms of African-American literature. I've read this book before but I could not remember when. We just studied the novel and I decided to read it very quickly to remember it. The Bluest Eye is a disturbing yet beautiful novel. I do agree that Morrison is not for everyone.

A Devil's Chaplain is an excellent collection of Dawkin's writing, ranging across the topics of genetics, memetics, pseudoscience, religion, terrorism and the nature of life itself. This is a field trip through Dawkin's mind, including letters to the prime minister, introductions to the books of others, and pieces that have appeared in popular print. His eulogy for his good friend Douglas Adams is particularly touching, and no less so is his treatment of his late rival, Stephen Jay Gould. But the best is saved for last, with his incredible piece entitled A Prayer for my Daughter, in which he tries to prepare his young child for the world of deception that lies ahead, and arm her against it. This is the quintessential introduction to Dawkins, and shows that he is more than just an outspoken advocate of humanism and reason - he is a loyal friend, an attentive father, a loving husband, and when the ocassion calls for it, a fierce champion for the truth. If you have never read Dawkins before, I would highly recommend that this is where you start.

In short, I may describe this book as another diamond from Jared's bag of gems, where he told us a story of human sexuality from the evolutionary perspective. In this book, he described that the attributes of human sexuality e.g. concealed sex, monogamous society, recreational sex, non-existence of male lactation were developed because of specific evolutionary reasons. More interestingly, even the evolution of female menopause is a deceptive game of evolution to make more by making less. He also argued that the role of men and women in society was shaped by the long-term effect of evolution. The storytelling style, ample interesting facts, and wise evolutionary reasoning make this book exciting.

This is a unique one for Asimov, and not connected to his usual fictional universe. Ironically, this is his first book I tried to read, in Malayalam translation, no less! But either the translation was bad, or the story was untranslatable, or I was too young for it... I dropped it after a few pages. I am glad I did, because I could read the original afresh. This story is about a group called Eternals who travel outside of linear time, stepping in when required within the time-stream to make things "better for humanity". Well, it all ends up rather like America making the world safe for democracy. I don't remember much other than the main character almost meeting himself as he enters the time-stream from different points. For some reason, this is considered a disaster. I don't know why. If I get chance, I would like to go forward and meet my older self, just to know how I made out.

The universe is a joke. Even before I was shown the meaning of life in a dream at 17 (then promptly forgot it because I thought I smelled pancakes), I knew this to be true--and yet, I have always felt a need to search for the truth, that nebulous, ill-treated creature. Adams has always been, to me, to be a welcome companion in that

Darwin wrote this book in 1872. It's interesting to compare what he wrote about then with what his successor theorists write about today. In contrast to today’s emphasis on universals (e.g., humans are this or not this or that), Darwin notes throughout this book that individuals have a wide variability in physical, emotional, and mental

There is a deep sense of curiosity in most of us on how the universe came to be. If we manage to determine that, it would be the pinnacle of human intellect & achievement, I think. Lawrence argues in the book how science has progressed enough to explain how the universe grew from ‘Nothing’. A note of warning though – this ‘Nothing’ assumes the

his could be seen as Richard Dawkins at his best. It is a collection of shorter works from journal, magazine, and newspaper articles, speeches, lectures, and online posts. The topics run the gamut of topics: the values of science, Darwinism, looking towards the future, religion (or anti-religion), current issues (at the time they were written),

The first half or so was amazing, and the rest was still really interesting (especially the end), if not quite as exhilarating. At the same time, you have to remember that even that powerhouse of scientific poetry, Carl Sagan, had some dry chapters every now and then. Some dryness definitely doesn't make it any less worth the read, and its mild anyway. Overall, this book was extremely enjoyable, and a breeze to get through.

Richard Dawkins shot to celebrity in 1976 with this rabble-rousing book, which change the game by inventing the word "meme" and basically nothing else, the rest of his ideas range from "ehhh not exactly" to "yeah but so what." Fun to read though! The gist is that the essential unit of life is the gene; our bodies are

Sometimes one book is enough. Sometimes less is more. Sometimes a story needs to be left alone. I have never been more disappointed with a sequel in my entire life. It’s that bad I wish I never read it and I also wish that the author never wrote it because it adds absolutely nothing to the franchise. I’m so surprised at how poor it is. I’ve heard
