James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (1882 - 1941) İrlandalı yazar. Katolik bir ailedendi. Dublin Üniversitesinde çağdaş dilleri öğrendi (1902). Özellikle karşılaştırmalı dil bilgisiyle ilgilenerek sağlam bir kültüre sahip oldu. Tıp öğrenimi için Paris'e gitti, bir yıl sonra Dublin'e döndü. Bir müddet ders verdi. 1904'te tekrar Avrupa'ya geçti. Bir süre Paris'te kaldıktan sonra İtalya'nın Trieste şehrine yerleşti (1906). Trieste'de İngilizce dersleri vererek geçimini sağladı. 1907'de şiirleri yayınlandı: Chamber Music (Oda müziği). 1914'da hikayelerini topladığı Dublinliler'i Londra'da çıkardı. Asıl ününü romanlarıyla sağladı. Şair Ezra Paund'un yardımıyla ilk romanı Sanatçının Bir Genç Adam Olarak Portresi, The Egoist dergisinde tefrika edildi, 1916'da da kitaplaştırıldı. Ulysses'i de tefrika edilmeye başladıktan sonra 1922'de tamamladı. Joyce'un bu eseri dizgi yanlışlarıyla doluydu. Aslına uygun yeni baskısı ancak 1984'te yapıldı.
